How is Baseball Played?

Runs and Dismissals

The team that scores the most runs by the end of the ninth inning simply wins the game. If the scores are level at the end after the end of nine innings each, the game is extended into an extra inning to get a result out of it. The role of the pitcher is to pitch/throw the ball overhand towards the batter. The batter then looks to ensure that he hits the ball to get the runs.

RUN : The Players can score runs by hitting the ball and running around the four bases in a counter clockwise direction, as the catcher will try to collect the ball and throw it on one of the bases before the batter reaches the base in order to get him out. The batter can run in stages or all in one go, depending on the bases he thinks he can reach without getting out. If a player reaches the base before the ball, they are called ‘safe’. Once a batter has hit the ball and start running to the base, they are called as a ‘runner.’

If the runner reaches one of the bases successfully then the other batter will come and take strike. That way, it becomes easier to score. However, if the ball is hit in the air and then caught by one of the players in infield or outfield, then that batter is out. The same applies if the ball is thrown to first base before the batter arrives at the base.

OUT : A batter is also ruled out if he fails to connect with the ball three times and it goes directly into the catcher’s glove that stands behind him.

STRIKE : Each miss by the batter is referred to as a ‘strike,’ and if it’s ‘three strikes,’ then the batsman will be adjourned out by the umpire. If the batting team has three players out, the second team will get to bat as they look to outscore their opponents.

The defensive team also has three outfielders. When the teams are on offence, they have nine players in batting order and this can’t be changed during the game although players could be substituted in for one another.
