Gujarat Lions had a start in their debut IPL season in 2016. GL finished at the top of the league standings in their first attempt and also qualified for the IPL playoffs. However, they lost both of their playoffs game to crash out of the competition. In the subsequent year, they failed to repeat the performance, but they made sure to leave a mark before signing off in 2017. Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils), on the other hand, have struggled to establish themselves as a serious contender after all these years.
The two IPL sides faced each other 4 times across two seasons in 2016 and 2017. While Gujarat Lions had managed a single win, Delhi Capitals had registered 3 wins over the Gujarat-based franchise. While, at Delhi home, both sides had won a single game each, Delhi Capitals had won both away games against the Lions.

In 2017, Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Lions in both home and away games to complete a season double over them.
In 2017, the first game between the two sides was played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. The home side won the toss and invited Gujarat Lions to bat first. The Lions had a horrible start as they lost both openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum in the 2nd over itself. However, Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik didn’t let the game slip away as the duo added 133 runs in 12 overs for the 3rd wicket. While Raina scored 77 runs off 43 deliveries before getting out, Karthik played a knock of 65 runs off 34 deliveries. After the dismissal of the duo, the cameos from Aaron Finch and Ravindra Jadeja pushed Gujarat Lions to a score of 208/7 in 20 overs. Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins did impress with the ball with 2 wickets each in their account. In the chase, the Lions picked up the wicket of the opener Karun Nair early. What they didn’t know was a storm named Rishabh Pant coming their way. The wicketkeeper-batsman went on to score 97 runs off 43 deliveries in that game. The youngster scored 9 sixes during his innings and added 143 runs in just 10.3 overs alongside Sanju Samson (61 runs off 31 deliveries). The wicket-keeping duo took the game away from the Lions before getting out. From there, it was a cakewalk for Shreyas Iyer and Corey Anderson as they took Delhi home without losing any further wicket. Delhi Capitals registered a dominating victory of 7 wickets with 2.3 overs remaining. Rishabh Pant deservingly won the man of the match for his once in a lifetime performance.
The reverse leg was played at Green Park Kanpur, and once again, Delhi won the toss, and they elected to bowl first. Gujarat Lions scored quick runs at the top but kept losing wickets to put themselves in a spot of bother at 56/3 after 6.3 overs. From here, Dinesh Karthik (40 runs off 28 deliveries) and Aaron Finch (69 runs off 39 deliveries) added 92 runs together for the 4th wicket. Small cameos from James Faulkner and Ravindra Jadeja took the Lions to a total of 195/5 in 20 overs. Chasing the target, Delhi Capitals lost both Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant early. The other opener, Karun Nair (30 runs off 15 deliveries), added 57 runs for the 3rd wicket alongside Shreyas Iyer. It was an all Shreyas Iyer show from thereon. The youngster kept scoring runs despite wickets kept falling around him. Iyer went on to score 96 runs off 57 deliveries before getting out. Australian pacer Pat Cummins scored 24 runs in 13 deliveries to help Delhi’s cause. However, it was Amit Mishra who scored two boundaries in two deliveries in the last over to register a 2 wickets win for Delhi in a nail-biting finish to the cricket game. James Faulkner picked up 2 wickets with the ball for the Lions. Iyer was awarded man of the match for his heroic knock.
