GL vs SRH

Gujarat Lions was one of the two teams which came into existence in 2016 alongside Rising Pune Supergiants to replace Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for the two IPL seasons. The Lions found success as it made it to the play-offs in IPL 2016. Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, have only emerged as one of the most consistent sides in last few IPL seasons. SRH have regularly found themselves in the reckoning for the play-offs.

SRH vs GL 2017 meetings

The first game between the two sides in 2017 IPL season was played at SRH home, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. The home side won the toss and invited Gujarat Lions to bat first. Jason Roy (31 runs) gave a brisk start to the Lions but Rashid Khan trapped three batsmen at a quick interval to reduce GL at 57/4 after 9 overs. West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith and Dinesh Karthik tried to control the damage as the duo added 56 runs for the 5th wicket. After the departure of Smith and Karthik for 37 runs and 30 runs respectively, GL could not do much, and they posted a mediocre total of 135/7 after 20 overs. Afghan leggie Rashid Khan was the star with the ball as he finished with the figures of 3/19 in his 4 overs. In reply, SRH made the quick work of the target despite losing Shikhar Dhawan early in the chase. David Warner (76 runs unbeaten off 45 deliveries) and Moises Henriques (52 runs unbeaten off 39 deliveries) added 108 runs unbeaten for the 2nd wicket. SRH completed the chase with 4.3 overs remaining and registered a 9 wickets win over the visitors. Praveen Kumar picked up the single wicket for the Lions, and Rashid Khan was awarded man of the match for his brilliant bowling.

The reverse leg was played at GL’s adopted home Green Park, Kanpur. For the 2nd time in a row, Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bowl first. Gujarat Lions made a blistering start as the opening duo of Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan added 111 runs inside 11 overs for the first wicket. Both openers completed their respective fifties before departing to give GL a solid base. While Smith scored 54 runs off 33 deliveries, Kishan scored 61 runs off 40 deliveries before going back to the hut. However, what followed after will haunt GL’s fans all their life. The Lions collapsed like a house of cards to lose their 10 wickets for 43 runs. After Smith and Kishan, no batsman other than Ravindra Jadeja (20 runs unbeaten) could touch double digits. Four batsmen out of the remaining eight failed to open their account. GL only posted a total of 154/10 in 19.2 overs. Pacer Mohammad Siraj returned with a well-deserved four-for, and Rashid Khan once again accounted for 3 wickets. Chasing the target, SRH lost Shikhar Dhawan and Moises Henriques inside first 3 overs. But their skipper David Warner found a new ally in Vijay Shankar this time. The duo added unbeaten 123 runs for the 3rd wicket to complete an easy chase. While Warner returned unbeaten at a score of 69 runs off 52 deliveries, Shankar returned with the figures of 63 off 44 deliveries. SRH won by 8 wickets with 11 deliveries remaining. Praveen Kumar accounted for both wickets and registered the figures of 2/22 in his 4 overs. Mohammad Siraj was awarded the player of the match.

Australian opener Aaron Finch is the top scorer for Gujarat Lions with 106 runs in 5 innings against SRH. He is followed by Suresh Raina with 103 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of 130.38. Dwayne Smith has managed to score 93 runs in 4 innings against SRH for GL, while Ravindra Jadeja has also scored 71 runs for GL against SRH in 4 innings.

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo picked up 4 wickets for GL against SRH in 3 innings. Praveen Kumar also accounted for 4 wickets against SRH in 5 innings. Both Shivil Kaushik and Dhawal Kulkarni bagged 2 wickets each for GL against the Hyderabad-based side in 3 and 4 innings respectively.
