Mumbai and Hyderabad have very rich heritage of cricket from their histories. Both cities have produced some of the all-time greats for India. And when it’s the question of Indian Premier League, then both franchises have been neck and neck in terms of records over the years. In recent years, MI vs SRH has witnessed a strong pattern of low-scoring thrillers between both the sides mainly due to their superior bowling attacks.
Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have met a total of 24 times in the IPL. Mumbai Indians have won 12 games while 11 games have gone SRH’s way. Mumbai Indians have been impressive when they play at Wankhede while neutral matches have been dominated by Sunrisers Hyderabad over the years. Pitches at both the venues have complimented batting sides more often but teams with world-class bowling line-ups don’t shy away on any pitches. In SRH vs MI head to head, Sunrisers have won 3 of the last 5 matches played between these two sides.

SRH vs MI 2019: Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad locked horns twice during the league phase. First, Sunrisers Hyderabad hosted Mumbai Indians at Rajiv Gandhi International stadium in early April. Hosts won the toss and decided to bowl first. Mumbai Indians found it very difficult to get going on a slow pitch against a quality bowling attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan all suffocated MI batsmen to the full effects. Late fireworks from Kieron Pollard gave something to defend to Mumbai Indians. Chasing 137, Sunrisers Hyderabad had a reasonable start from the opening pair of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. But once the procession started for the home side, it never really ended. Young WI pacer Alzarri Joseph had an evening of his lifetime as he picked up 6 wickets for just 12 runs to grab all the headlines. SRH were bowled out for just 96 runs and Mumbai won the match by 40 runs.
In the return encounter at Wankede Stadium, Mumbai Indians won the toss again and elected to bat first this time. Quinton de Kock starred for the home team with a magnificent 69 runs. He got valuable supports from the captain Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav from the other end. Mumbai ended up posting 162 runs on the board. In reply, the new opening pair of Wriddhiman Saha and Martin Guptill was watchful early on against the new ball. This match turned out to be a proper ‘bull-fight’ in the end and Manish Pandey was successful to level the scores for SRH with his last over heroics. After the match ended in a tie, Mumbai Indians won the super-over easily thanks to the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

One of the main strengths of Mumbai Indians is their settled ‘core’ in both batting and bowling departments. Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard have been with the team for close to a decade now. As a result of this environment, young players take a lot of confidence from the senior players. The same mix of experience and youth can be spotted in the table of top run-scorers against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Captain Rohit Sharma is at the top with 392 runs from 18 innings while Kieron Pollard takes the second spot with 387 runs from 17 innings. Krunal Pandya has also been impressive with 157 runs from 7 innings. Suryakumar Yadav completes the list with 92 runs from 4 matches against SRH. Krunal Pandya is the best player for MI in terms of an average of 31.40 and a strike-rate of 149.52.
Kieron Pollard leads the home and neutral tables while Rohit Sharma has been pretty good while playing at Hyderabad. Mumbai Indians would be hoping to replicate their recent performances against SRH on the back of their batting fire-power.
Mumbai Indians have depth in each and every department of the game and it is no surprises that they have been the most successful team in the IPL. Lasith Malinga has been the ‘cornerstone’ for Mumbai franchise and he has been with the team since 2009. He has stellar records against almost all the teams and Sunrisers Hyderabad is no different to him. He leads the pack when it comes to top wicket-takers with 13 wickets from 9 innings. Mitch McClenaghan has 11 scalps from just 7 innings while Jasprit Bumrah has taken 10 wickets from 9 innings. Alzarri Joseph storms into the reckoning with just a single match with his 6 wicket-haul at Hyderabad last year. He has the best average, strike-rate and economy rate from the list.
Jasprit Bumrah has been particularly lethal at home while Lasith Malinga rules the away and neutral tables for top-wicket takers. Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen will be having their work cut out when they take the field against Mumbai in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for MI vs SRH Live Match Action.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batting lineup is considered to be top-heavy in the recent years. Their opening partnership of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow is the best in the business of T20 cricket. David Warner is one of the all-time greats of the game in the shortest format of the game and when it comes to top run-scorers against Mumbai Indians, he leads the pack by some margin. He has a total of 343 runs from 9 innings against MI. He is followed by Manish Pandey with 114 runs from 4 innings. Deepak Hooda and Mohammad Nabi complete the list with 78 and 56 runs respectively. David Warner stands out from the table with an average of 49 and a strike-rate of 143.51.
David Warner leads the table for home and neutral matches but Manish Pandey has the highest runs when teams play at Wankhede stadium. Most surprising omission from the list is of Kane Williamson and he would like to correct his record against MI in the upcoming season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad is arguably the top quality bowling side in the IPL currently with a plethora of options in each category. Tom Moody has stressed upon the importance of bowlers in T20 cricket time and again. SRH bowlers are having impressive performances against the defending champions Mumbai Indians from the past. Bhuvneshwar Kumar tops the list with 16 scalps from 10 innings while Siddarth Kaul follows him with 10 wickets from 4 matches against Mumbai Indians. Rashid Khan and Sandeep Sharma are at the following positions with 6 and 4 wickets in that order.
Siddarth Kaul is particularly good at home with 7 wickets from just 3 matches while Bhuvneshwar Kumar prevails during away and neutral games. Khaleel Ahmed comes into the picture with his performance at Wankhede during the last year’s IPL. He will be looking to build upon the same in the upcoming season in 2020.
