Rising Pune Supergiants were around in IPL for only two years but left their mark. RPS managed to reach the finals in the 2017 edition of the high-octane tournament. While they managed to play well almost all the teams in the competition, they struggled to compete against the might of Kolkata Knight Riders.

In RPS vs KKR 2016, KKR won both games against RPS and completed a season double over them. In KKR vs RPS 2017, KKR started with a win but RPS managed to pull back one game against the Kolkata-based franchise.
The first game between the two sides in 2017 was played at Maharashtra Cricket Association, Pune. The visitors won the toss in this game and asked the Supergiants to bat first. Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi gave the home side a good start. The openers added 65 runs inside 8 overs before Tripathi departs for a well-made 38 runs off 23 deliveries. Steve Smith joined Rahane in the middle, and the duo added 47 runs for the 2nd wicket. Upon the departure of Rahane (46 runs), MS Dhoni came in and played a quick cameo to up the ante. Dhoni added 23 runs off 11 deliveries to the scorecard of RPS. Dan Christians also added quickfire 16 runs off 6 deliveries before getting dismissed at the last delivery of the innings. Steve Smith remained not out at a score of 51 runs off 37 deliveries to take RPS to a total of 182/5 in 20 overs. Kuldeep Yadav finished with 2 wickets for KKR in his 4 overs. KKR lost Sunil Narine early in the chase, but Gautam Gambhir (62 runs off 46 deliveries) and Robin Uthappa (87 runs off 47 deliveries) added 158 runs in 14.1 overs to take the game away from RPS. Uthappa, in particular, was aggressive of the two and went on to hit six 6s during his innings. After the departure of GG and Robbie, Manish Pandey and Darren Bravo took KKR over the line with 11 deliveries remaining. KKR registered a 7 wickets win over RPS. Robin Uthappa was adjudged man of the match for his heroics with the willow.
The reverse fixture was played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. This time RPS won the toss, and they elected to bowl first. Jaydev Unadkat proved the decision with the wicket of Sunil Narine in the first over itself. KKR’s innings could not get going as they lost 4 wickets inside 10 overs. Manish Pandey (37 runs) and Colin de Grandhomme (36 runs) built a small but fruitful partnership to bring some momentum to KKR innings. Suryakumar Yadav (30 runs off 16 deliveries) provided finishing touches to take KKR to a total of 155/8. Both Jaydev Unadkat and Washington Sundar finished with 2 wickets each. Chasing the target, RPS lost Ajinkya Rahane early. However, Rahul Tripathi went on to score 93 runs off 52 runs to take the game away from KKR single-handed. Despite losing the wickets on a regular interval on the other end, RPS managed to overhaul the target with 4 wickets in hand and 4 balls to spare. Chris Woakes was the star with the ball as the English pacer finished with 3 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs. Rahul Tripathi was deservingly adjudged player of the match for his brilliant knock with the bat.
