The first game between two sides in 2017 was played at Holkar Stadium, Indore. The Kings from Punjab won the toss and asked the Supergiants to bat first. The decision proved to be a fruitful one as KXIP accounted for both openers Ajinkya Rahane and Mayank Agarwal inside first 7 overs. The bowlers kept things tight, and they soon picked Steve Smith and MS Dhoni as well. Ben Stokes (50 off 32 balls) and Manoj Tiwary (40 off 23 deliveries) added 61 runs for the 5th wicket to arrest the innings from collapsing. Dan Christian played a cameo of 17 runs off 8 deliveries to push RPS total to 163/6 in 20 overs. Sandeep Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 33 runs in 4 overs. Chasing the target, KXIP kept building small partnerships and also kept losing wickets at the regular intervals as well. After the handy contributions from Hashim Amla (28 runs) and Axar Patel (24 runs), it was the partnership between Glenn Maxwell (44 runs off 20 deliveries) and David Miller (30 runs off 27 deliveries) of 79 runs to chase the target in 19 overs. Glenn Maxwell was adjudged man of the match.
The reverse leg was played at MCA, Pune where the home side RPS won the toss opted to bowl first. The decision proved to be a masterstroke as Jaydev Unadkat accounted for Martin Guptill’s wicket on the first delivery of the innings. The Kings could not arrest the fall of wickets as they kept losing wickets on the regular interval. Axar Patel ended up the top-scorer for the Kings, and they bundled out at a score of 73 runs inside 16 overs. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with the figures of 3 wickets for 19 runs. Jaydev Unadkat, Adam Zampa, and Jaydev Unadkat ended up with 2 wickets each. Chasing the small target, RPS were off to a steady start and the openers Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi added 41 runs for the first wicket. After Rahul Tripathi got out at a score of 28 runs, Steven Smith joined Rahane in the middle and completed the chase within 12 overs at a loss of only a single wicket. While Rahane returned unbeaten at a score of 34, Steve Smith remained not out for 15 runs. Only Axar Patel could trouble RPS batsman and clinched the only wicket for 13 runs in 2 overs. Jaydev Unadkat was adjudged man of the match for his clinical bowling display.
